Psychology's Nature-Nurture Debate
It is well-recognized that genetic inheritance is a biological factor in the development of several physical traits. Eye color, hair texture (straight or wavy), skin pigmentation, and some disorders (such as Huntingdon's chorea)
Is it all a result of inherited genes? If not entirely determined, several physical traits appear to be at least significantly influenced by our parents' genetic makeup.
Height, weight, hair loss in men, life expectancy, and susceptibility to particular diseases (such as breast cancer in women) are all positively correlated between people who are genetically related. Many have questioned whether psychological traits like behavioral tendencies, personality traits, and mental abilities are also "wired in" before we are even born in the light of these facts.
Nativists are those who take a strong hereditary stance. Their fundamental premise is that individual differences are caused by each person's unique genetic code, while the traits of the human race as a whole are the result of evolution. In general, the earlier a certain ability manifests, the more likely it is that genetic elements are at play.
It is believed that traits and distinctions that do not manifest at birth but do so later in life are the results of maturation. That is to say, each of us has an internal "biological clock" that automatically turns certain types of behavior on or off.
