The Female Voice - Poetry and Politics 101 Preface
In order to answer the fundamental issue, "What role does poetry play in political society?" this series examines poetry over the last two centuries. The study of poetry's social responsibility has frequently been overlooked in favor of research on how poetry interacts with language and emotion. The goal of Poetry and Politics 101 is to revive poetry and explore how it might influence social and political change. Can poetry bring about change? Can it affect how people feel? Can it provide direction in these tumultuous political times? It will also look at the evolution of poetry's function.
Poetry once held the distinction of being the most widely read genre of literature; it was published in newspapers and magazines and played a significant role in cultural response and reaction. However, as new forms of media came to dominate in the late 20th century, poetry's place in society began to decline. This series will consider how poetry's place in politics and society has changed over time by moving chronologically through significant time periods.
